Hi Everyone!

To our Sunday Supper Club - again, sorry for the glitch with Zoom on Sunday and on the menu this week is Brisket with Roasted Potatoes and Brussel Sprouts. I love this partnership with Volante so much. Here is a quick clip that the Needham News put together.

Our friend, Beverly wanted to remind everyone to be very vigilant and careful about scams. She wrote, "When I returned from Florida, I had received four calls from Publishers Clearing house, two on my voicemail and two on my answering machine, saying I had won $10,500,000!!!! Today I received the same message again. I also get calls from Eversource saying I am such a good payer that they want to give me a $50 credit card and yesterday I got two calls from Medicare. Since everyone is working from home and you are expecting return calls it makes it difficult not to answer……But be sure to tell everyone to beware." Thanks for the reminder!!

Our friend, Mary Ann wrote, "Thank you for the wonderful documentary and tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a remarkable woman which we all can attribute to our world today. I enjoy your daily newsletter and look froward to the interesting message of the day." Happy to do it, Mary Ann and thanks again, to Mary Ann!

Now for Survey Central!!

We have 3 surveys that I would love if you could do.

Time: Wednesday, April 14 @ 2:30PM

To join Zoom: Click here

Meeting ID: 871 3391 2120

Passcode: ODD

*While not a couple in the traditional sense, both of these travelers were united in much of their life styles and passions.  Both were English, totally enamoured of the "pull of the East" as the Middle East was known in the early 1900s.  Each was a product of the Empire; members of the British Empire which ruled over 1/4 of the world's population. As such, they were expected to uphold and serve the interests of the realm.

T.E. Lawrence  was content to be alone.  He shunned groups and teams, but was happy when venturing off the beaten path, At an early age he would explore castles in England and France and search for artifacts . He placed great value on being physically fit and willingly  pursued treks to the unknown.   Ultimately, he would travel to the Middle East seeking satisfaction from learning of the culture, history, and beauty of this strange land. In doing so, he became a  major factor in the struggle for independence of Arab countries from the Ottoman Empire. Lawrence would be an iconic  figure in the M iddle East.

Gertrude Bell was born in 1868 to the 6th richest family in England. As a child she was always testing limits of her parents, nannies, teachers, and elders.  She would become an accomplished Alpinist showing no fear and great strength.  At Oxford she would excel in "a mans world". As expected, she would travel the world and , like Lawrence, be captivated by the Middle East.  A venerable traveler, she would go on numerous treks into the desert and enter the tent of the Bedouin Sheikh demanding  an  audience.  Her knowledge of Arab culture, history  and language (she could speak 7 languages fluently) allowed her to gain respect and access to countless Bedouin leaders.  Gertrude Bell would be known by many Arab leaders as "The Queen of the Desert".  And,like Lawrence, she ould dedicate much of her life to gaining freedom for the Arabs in the Middle East.   This is a two part presentation; first will be about Lawrence and second with Gertrude Bell.  However they will both appear in each presentation.

To Pre Register for Zoom  Click here

*Join us to learn of this unique Boston tragedy. On January 15, 1919 a huge molasses holding tank owned by the Purity Distilling Company ruptured, flooding Boston's North End with 2.3 million gallons of molasses.  In all, 21 people were killed and dozens injured, and large sections of the neighborhood were destroyed.  The Purity company knew the tank was poorly-built and failing, but covered up the flaws and tried to blame Italian anarchists for the disaster.  In this presentation, we'll discuss the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 - its causes, the devastating impact it had on Boston's North End, and the regulatory changes that resulted.

Presented by: Mike Manning and The Needham History Center and Museum.

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying this Monday!

To all our Sunday Supper Clubbers - last night was a funk and we are not sure why. I tried to go on and it wouldn't let me either. For example our friend, Barbara write to me, " I was given a meal on Friday for Sunday's dinner social...I therefore was ready to eat and socialize tonight at 5:30 PM; however, when I tried to zoom in, I got a message saying something like your sponsor is busy on another meeting. I waited for awhile and then tried 10 minutes later and still got the same message..." Thanks, Barbara! I hope it works out next week - I missed seeing the crew!

Our friend, Beverly wrote, "I just wanted you and Stephan to know what a great service the taxi ride is...the driver picked me up early and it was absolutely no hassle. The ride home was equally wonderful. It is always such a hassle going to that location and the parking is a nightmare. The ride saved me so much anguish. Thank you Thank you many times over." That's why we are here!!!

Our friend, Nancy also wrote, "Yes thank you so much for everything! I am fully vaccinated thanks to your transportation help! I really appreciate all that you do!"
Our team is always here to help!

Our friends, Mark and Gerry sent this great video along.

NEWS/UPDATES

Our friend and Public Information Officer sent this out:

Needham Animal Control Helps Return Dog 5 Years After He Went Missing

In the category of you couldn’t possibly make this up, Needham Animal Control Officer David Parsons helped return a dog to its owner nearly 40 miles away after the dog went missing five years ago! Officer Parsons trapped the stray dog with the assistance of Missing Dogs Massachusetts. They brought the Basenji to Highland Animal Hospital in Needham to be cleaned up and treated. Highland Animal Hospital found that it was microchipped. It turns out that “Bay” the Basenji was formerly an Arkansas street dog and had quite the knack for survival. She was taken in by a Millbury woman and was at a sitter’s house in Framingham when she went missing in June of 2016. This amazing dog survived five New England winters and was reunited with her owner a few days ago. Great work by ACO Parsons and Missing Dogs Massachusetts!

MassDOT Awards Needham Grant to Fund Dining Parklets
The Town of Needham has been awarded a $57,200 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation that will allow the Town to continue its efforts to support local restaurants beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. The Town’s Department of Public Works applied for the grant, which will allow the department to purchase and install two modular parklets, one in the downtown area and one in the Heights. The parklets will allow for increased space for outdoor dining and will include tables and chairs as well as planters and a guard rail. The parklets are portable and can be redeployed in areas that may be underserved by other outdoor dining opportunities. The Department of Public Works is aiming to get the parklets installed early this summer.
