Severe Weather Preparedness

As severe weather events are occurring more frequently in Needham, the Town has put together a preparedness checklist and provided resources with additional information for residents.


Heavy Rain/Potential Flooding Preparedness Checklist: 

  • Actions Before Rain/Flooding
    1. Prepare for possible power outages:
      1. Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries
      2. Charge cell phones and electronics devices
      3. Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings
    2. Clear clogged rain gutters to allow water to flow away from your home
    3. Elevate items stored in your basement to prevent possible damage
    4. If you have a sump pump, check that it is working
    5. Consider installing French drains or other mitigating features - contact the Building Department for assistance
    6. Remove any tree branches or other debris that may become flying hazards in high winds from your property
    7. Develop or review your Family Emergency Plan
    8. Sign up for Emergency Alerts from the Town of Needham
    9. Check that you have appropriate insurance coverage for your home and car
