YOUTH PROGRAMS



MINI-EVERGREEN

Fun-filled, creative program that will inspire your child’s imagination.  Activities include indoor/outdoor games, songs, arts/crafts, themes of the week and special events.  Children must be toilet trained.

Back by popular demand!! For the young Einstein or Madame Curie who constantly wonders “WHY?” Hands on experiments will introduce the young explorer to the wonderful world of science and discovery. The “magic” of science will be explored, including volcanoes, goofy putty, kid made lava lamp, bubble bombs, and more.

KIDS OFF BROADWAY

Activities include improvisational training, character development, props, costume creation, writing & performance. Using your imagination you will create memorable opportunities for self expression through acting, dancing, writing and more!

SESSION 1:  Into Wonderland: Jump down the rabbit hole and explore the Wonderland within. Let’s journey through our dreams and come out the other side a little bit stronger and a little bit wiser.

SESSION 2:  Native Journeys: Learn the stories that inspired the original caretakers of this great land to live in harmony with all of nature. Come trek into the wild to learn more about earth, animals and ourselves to reveal how we are all connected.

SESSION 3:   Myths and Legends from Around the World: We will fill our minds with myths, folklore and legends from different cultures around the world. Once we have had our fill we will write our own legendary myth of the Kids Off Broadway to add to the list.

Playground is a flexible drop in program where children can choose from a number of organized activities.  Regular attendance is not required.  Come for the day or just a few hours to a safe, well balanced fun environment where “kids can be kids!”

SUMMER ARCHERY PROGRAM

A great way for individuals of all ages to learn the sport of archery. National Archery Association trained instructors. All equipment provided.

YOUTH CANOE AND KAYAK CAMP

Have fun while learning paddling safety and basic maneuvering skills. Games and short outings on the lake develop more advanced skills and build strength for a final trip. Canoe and kayak instruction are given. Transportation is NOT provided.

Quickstart Tennis is an exciting new play format designed to bring children into the game by utilizing special equipment, and a court with dimensions tailored to age and size. Quickstart Tennis is fast, easy and fun– come learn on our newly created Quickstart Courts!! Birth Certificate required for 5 year olds.

Junior Tennis covers the basic aspects of the sport including skill evaluation, forehand, backhand, serve, volley, overhead and strategy.

NEEDHAM TENNIS ACADEMY

New to tennis? Have some experience? The Needham Tennis Academy will teach and improve skills and elevate your game in a fun, positive environment. Instructors will work to enable participants to progress at their own pace and develop and improve strokes and to acquire basic skills and enthusiasm for the game of tennis. After a morning of tennis and lunch, participants will take a short walk and cool off during daily recreational swimming at Rosemary Pool. After swimming each day, mini matches will be held!

A town-wide recreational doubles league designed to promote fitness, friendship and fun!  This league is appropriate for Intermediate and Advanced tennis players with a NTRP of a 3.0 or above.  Register with a doubles partner or we will team you up. *Don’t want to commit to each week? Sign up as a substitute.

SENIOR GOLF LEAGUE

Registration for Needham Residents Only.  The league is for Men and Women, age 50 and older, and is held at the Needham Golf Club on Tuesday mornings.  Previous experience is necessary with a 9 hole score of 72 or less.  After eight weeks of play, additional rounds can be purchased for $21 per round payable at the Park and Recreation office. Substitute list taken at Park and Recreation office.

SUMMER SENIOR EXERCISE

Stretching, strengthening, coordination and stabilization exercises that will benefit Men and Women, ages 50 and older, from head and toe!

ADAPTIVE AQUATICS

Individualized lessons for swimmers with a disability.  Weekday afternoon lessons are scheduled between swim instructor and parent/participant. Please call the Park and Recreation, Assistant Director for more details.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

**  Registration deadline: Wednesday, June 2, 2010  **

No Late Registrations Accepted, No Exceptions.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach candidates the skills needed to prevent and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies to prevent drowning and injuries. The pre-requisite test includes a 300 yard continuous swim, using these strokes: 100 yards of front crawl; 100 yards of breaststroke; 100 yards of front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both; 40 yard timed swim and retrieval of a 10lb brick.   Attendance at each class is mandatory for certification.  Those who do not pass the pre-requisite swim test cannot continue in the class and will be given a refund.

GUARDSTART: LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW

American Red Cross “GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow” is a program for youth that provides a foundation of aquatic leadership knowledge, attitudes, and skills for those interested in learning about the skills necessary to become a lifeguard.  Registration deadlines are required to insure sufficient time to order workbooks.

Age:                       11 - 14 year olds

Day/Time:              Tuesdays AND Thursdays                1:30PM - 3:00 PM

SESSION 1:           July 27 and 29          Registration Deadline July 20

SESSION 2:           August 3 and 5        Registration Deadline July 27

Prerequisites:        Swim the front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.  Tread water for one minute using arms and legs.  Submerge and swim a distance of ten feet underwater.

Limit:                      Maximum of 10 participants (Minimum of 5)

FEE:                        $20/participant for 2 class session

 

 




TENNIS BADGE - 2010 SEASON RATES & INFOMATION

 

Badges are required for all public court use.  The Tennis Badges are available in the Park and Recreation Commission Office to NEEDHAM RESIDENTS only, ages 8 to adult.  Employees of a Needham business should call (781) 455-7521 and press 6 for information on badge availability. 

Badges may be purchased in person or by mail.  Tennis courts are located at the Newman School, Mills Field, and Needham High School.

On a separate sheet of paper, write all first and last names of household members, ages of children, address, precinct and home phone number.

Complete 2010 Tennis Badge and Public Courts information is available at the Park and Recreation Office on the first floor of the NEW Public Services Administration Building (PSAB), located at 500 Dedham Avenue, Needham, MA  02492


Reminder: In-line skating and/or skateboarding is NOT permitted on public tennis courts! High School courts are now open.  Completion of the renovation of Mills Courts is weather dependant and should  be open for use in mid to late May. The Newman School courts will be closed to public use during the renovation of the school during summer break.
