[ARCHIVED] Needham Police Encourage Residents to Keep Cars Locked

Needham-Police-Department

The Needham Police Department is issuing a statement to Needham residents in response to several recent incidents in Wellesley involving stolen motor vehicles.  Over the last month, the Wellesley Police Department has investigated reports of at least 8 stolen motor vehicles.  The stolen cars were all taken from Wellesley residents' driveways during the overnight hours.    In all of these cases, the vehicles were unlocked, with the keys left inside.  It appears thieves are being dropped off in a neighborhood, and walk from driveway to driveway trying car doors. Vehicles that are unlocked are then entered, and driven away by the thieves if the keys are inside.
The Needham Police Department is asking for the public’s help with preventing these crimes.  Residents are advised to lock the doors to their vehicles and remove the keys, especially during overnight hours.  These auto thefts are preventable if the keys are removed and the car locked.
