[ARCHIVED] 2022 Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant Flushing

NEEDHAM DPW - Water, Sewer & Drain Division

May 2, 2022  – June 15, 2022

Work Hours are 11 PM – 7 AM

Monday - Thursday

The Water, Sewer & Drain Division of the Needham Department of Public Works will be flushing water mains via hydrants throughout the Town beginning May 2, 2022 and ending June 15, 2022.

The purpose of water system flushing is to verify the safe operation of hydrants and valves; to remove accumulated sediment or mineral buildup in our water mains, to flush stale water from dead-end streets, restore or help maintain chlorine residual throughout the water system and continue maintaining a clean, safe water supply to customers.

The water flushing may result in a temporary discoloration of the water, as well as possible reduction in water pressure. The water discoloration is not a health risk. The Water, Sewer & Drain Division recommends restricting your water usage during this period. The discolored water may stain your laundry, especially white materials as well as the possible staining of plumbing fixtures. Therefore, please avoid doing laundry during the noted flushing period and certainly while such conditions exist.

Prior to washing clothes, including times after the hours stated in this notice, please check the cold water for possible discoloration. If the water is discolored, let the cold water run for a minute or two to begin clearing. If the water does not clear at that time, try again later. Unfortunately, the Town cannot guarantee that washing laundry and/or the possibility of discoloration, even during the evenings and other times of the day as the water system has been disturbed. Therefore, please check your water carefully prior to doing laundry and inspect the laundry before it is dried.

The Needham Water, Sewer & Drain Division appreciates your patience as we work to maintain the quality of the drinking water in Needham.  If you would like additional information, please call the Needham DPW - Water, Sewer & Drain Division at 781-455-7550 or visit the Town website at

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation
