[ARCHIVED] Snow is Coming. Here is What You Should Know....

Snow is coming. Here’s what you should know.

In anticipation of winter storm headed our way this evening into tomorrow, Needham Public Works is activating its snow operations later this evening. Town staff and contractors

will plow roadways, designated sidewalk routes and parking lots.

Forecasters are calling for accumulations of 12 or more inches, meaning it will take some time to fully clear roads and sidewalks.

Due to Covid, the Town currently has fewer staff and contractors than during winters past. While the DPW will still ensure that roads are passable for emergency services, it will take longer to fully clear roads and sidewalks. It may take 3-4 days post-storm for the sidewalks to be fully cleared.

If possible, please stay off the roads during the storm to allow plows to clear the roads. It will take longer for our plows to clear the snow from curb to curb, and it may take several passes to accomplish that. Because of that, you may clear your driveway before DPW has finished clearing the road, resulting in additional snow being pushed towards your driveway.

  1. Please be patient
  2. Report any issues using SeeClickFix
  3. DPW’s website outlines the snow program and includes tips and tricks for homeowners.

Town Buildings Closed for Appointments Thursday

Town Buildings will be closed for appointments Thursday. Please check the Building Status website for updates. A decision on the closure of the Recycling and Transfer Station will be made soon and posted on the website.

Become a Sidewalk Superhero!

The Town is encouraging residents to shovel their sidewalks within 12 hours of the storm’s end. Be a good neighbor – help seniors and others who need assistance clear the sidewalk in front of those homes. Kids (and kids at heart!) can take photos of their snow-clearing efforts and post them on social media using the hashtag #NeedhamSidewalkSuperhero for a chance to win a prize.

Snow Shoveling Assistance
 N
eedham Youth and Family Services offers a list of youth who are available for hire to shovel snow. For more information please contact Needham Youth Services at 781-455-7500. Ext: 333.

Shovel Safely
For those shoveling, please be sure to stay safe!  The National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely:

  • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
  • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
  • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter
  • Push the snow rather than lifting it
  • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
  • Lift with your legs, not your back
  • Do not work to the point of exhaustion

Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts
