The Health Department's Senior Safety and Food Training and Education Program (Senior SAFTE) offers free home visits by a public health nurse to educate the elderly in Needham who are at risk for unintentional injury because of safety, medication management or nutrition issues and concerns. In addition, the public health nurse will help fill out the File-of-Life card for each elder in the home. The File-of-Life card, which is left in the home, provides vital emergency medical and contact information. Emergency personnel are trained to look for the File-of-Life card on the refrigerator to quickly obtain medical and other potentially life-saving information.
Senior SAFTE's primary goal is to help elders on the Traveling Meals Program continue to live independently in their homes, but other elders are welcome to request this free service. If you know an elder who would benefit from this assessment, please contact the Health Department.
